“When the Land Remembers”- Indigenous Women's Writing Residency 2025

Are you an indigenous woman writer or storyteller with a deep connection to land and nature?

If yes, we invite you to apply for “When the Land Remembers”, a writing residency that brings together indigenous women from across Nepal to reflect, remember, and reimagine their relationship with land, water, forest, and home.

At a time when climate change, displacement, and development threaten ancestral lands and ecosystems, indigenous women’s voices rooted in memory, resistance, and ecological wisdom are more vital than ever.

This residency offers a space for rest, reflection, and solidarity. The residency will focus on nurturing the skills of emerging indigenous women writers from across Nepal, supporting them to express unique perspectives shaped by their diverse positionalities and social contexts.

Guided reading, writing and sharing sessions led by experienced facilitators will explore indigeneity in relation to the land and nature, encouraging participants to engage with intersecting issues such as climate justice, gender equity, and indigenous knowledge systems. Throughout the residency, we will explore how land is not just territory, but also memory, identity, and its sacred relationship with indigenous communities.

By the end of the residency we will collaborate and create original unpublished essays that will contribute to the growing English writings from Nepal & South Asian feminist literature especially in terms of women’s writing. This residency will also encourage long-term collaboration between the participants.

Our methodology includes

• Pre-Workshop Engagement: Participants will receive reading materials and writing prompts to begin exploring the theme of the residency.

• Writing Workshop (3 days): A residential program in Nepal where 5 writers will engage in:

  • Reading circles

  • Writing sessions

  • Peer feedback circles

  • Facilitated discussions on feminist methodologies and regional literature

  • Collaborative storytelling

• Post-Workshop Collaboration & Output: Participants will write creative non-fiction narratives, which will be published in a booklet format for wider distribution in Nepal.

We will be covering the cost of residency for selected participants, which includes accommodation, three meals for three days and a small travel allowance.

About The Pomelo: The Pomelo is a Himalayan digital publication platform centering stories and reflections from places often left out of national and global conversations. We publish essays, oral histories, and visual work exploring climate, culture, gender, language, care, and everyday life, with a feminist, decolonial, and place-rooted lens.

यदि हुनुहुन्छ भने, हामी तपाईंलाई "जब भूमीले सम्झन्छ" नामक लेखन आवास कार्यक्रममा आवेदन दिन आमन्त्रण गर्छौं। यो कार्यशालाको उद्देश्य नेपालभरिका नयाँ वा पहिलोपटक लेख्दै गरेका महिला लेखकहरूलाई एकआपसमा जोड्ने, कथा साट्ने, जीवन अनुभव साझा गर्ने, र सहकार्यको भावना विकास गर्ने हो।

आजको समयमा जलवायु परिवर्तन, विस्थापन, र विकासका नाममा पुर्ख्यौली थातथलो, प्राकृतिक स्रोत साधन, र वातावरणीय सन्तुलन संकटमा परेका छन्। यस्तो समयमा स्मृति, प्रतिरोध, र प्रकृतिसँगको ज्ञानमा आधारित आदिवासी जनजाति महिलाहरूको आवाज झनै महत्वपूर्ण छ।

यो लेखन आवास कार्यक्रमले विश्राम, चिन्तन र ऐक्यबद्दताको लागि सुरक्षित ठाउँ प्रदान गर्नेछ। अनुभवी प्रशिक्षकहरूद्वारा सञ्चालन हुने पढाइ, लेखन, र आदानप्रदान सत्रहरूमा आदिवासी महिलाहरुको भूमि र प्रकृतिसँगको सम्बन्ध र अर्थबारे छलफल गरिनेछ। यसले सहभागीहरूलाई जलवायु न्याय, लैंगिक समानता, आदिवासीको सिप-ज्ञान प्रणाली जस्ता विषयहरूमा लेख्न र सोच्न प्रेरित गर्नेछ। यस यात्रामा, हामी भूमि केवल भूगोल नभई, स्मृति, पहिचान, र आदिवासी समुदायहरुसगँ यसको अन्तरसम्बन्धहरु केलाउँदै छलफल गर्नेछौँ ।

यस आवासको अन्त्यमा, सहभागीहरूले मूल अंग्रेजीमा लेखिएका र पहिले कहिल्यै प्रकाशित नभएका निबन्ध तयार गर्नेछन्, जसले नेपाली र दक्षिण एशियाली नारीवादी लेखनमा योगदान पुर्‍याउनेछ। साथै, सहभागीहरूबीच दीर्घकालीन सहकार्यको सम्भावना पनि यसबाट सुरु हुनेछ।

हाम्रो कार्यपद्धति यस प्रकार छ:

• लेखन आवासअघि: आवासीय कार्यक्रम सुरु हुनुअघि सहभागीहरूले कार्यक्रमको मूल विषयसँग सम्बन्धित पढ्ने सामग्रीहरू र लेखन अभ्यास पाउनेछन्, जसले उनीहरूलाई पहिले नै सोच्न र लेख्न थाल्न मद्दत गर्नेछ।

• लेखन कार्यशाला (३ दिन): नेपालमा आयोजना हुने तीन दिनको आवासीय कार्यक्रममा छनौट भएका ५ जना लेखकहरू निम्न गतिविधिमा सहभागी हुनेछन्:

  • सामूहिक पठन/ वाचन चक्र (reading circles)

  • लेखन सत्रहरू

  • सुझाव-प्रतिक्रिया (peer feedback)

  • सामूहिक कथा लेखन अभ्यास

• कार्यशालापछि सहकार्य र प्रकाशन: कार्यशालापछि सहभागीहरूले सिर्जनात्मक गैर-आख्यायिक (creative non-fiction) लेखहरू तयार गर्नेछन्। यी लेखहरूलाई पुस्तिकाको रूपमा प्रकाशित गरिनेछ।

हामी छनोट भएका सहभागीहरूको लागि आवासको खर्च बेहोर्नेछौं, जसमा तीन दिनको बसोबास, खाना र यात्रा खर्च समावेश हुन्छ।
